Our Therapist

Dr. Marcus Kilian, Licensed Clinical Psychologist (KY) & Formational Coach

I am a owner of Paraclete Care and currently provide counseling sessions for individuals. I was born and raised in Germany and enjoy working with clients from diverse cultures and backgrounds. My current professional work includes serving as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Asbury University and as an Adjunct Professor at Asbury Theological Seminary and Richmont Graduate University. I have been happily married for over 25 years and we have two adult children and a miniature poodle.  My aspirational guiding motto is "loving God and loving people."

Regarding my professional background, I was in private practice for 9+ years in Minnesota and had been employed at state prisons, outpatient mental health clinics, and sex offender treatment facilities. I obtained a PsyD degree in Clinical Psychology from an APA accredited university. In addition, I received an MDiv degree in Pastoral Counseling and Christian Formation, a certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) in Organizational Leadership, and an MTh degree in (applied) Theological Ethics (specialization in Christian Leadership). I have published  on Christian counseling, marital enrichment, psychology of religion, spiritual formation, and leadership formation/ development.

I specialize in the treatment of marital distress, trauma/ PTSD, and sexual addiction:

  • I am passionate about helping married couples improve their relationship. I focused on marital enrichment approaches and marital interventions during my graduate studies and have used research-based marital therapy approaches for more than 10 years.
  • I have successfully utilized research-based interventions (including EMDR) to help clients achieve freedom from their intrusive symptoms stemming from past traumatic events. I have treated both males and females over the years and have helped clients with the following traumatic backgrounds: sexual abuse, domestic violence, childhood physical abuse and neglect, etc.
  • For 10+ years I have helped both male and female clients achieve freedom from sexual addiction by utilizing individual and group therapy modalities. My treatment approach is non-judgmental and compassionate. I have helped clients draw healthy sexual boundaries to achieve lasting sobriety from the devastating effects of sexual addiction.

I also provide Spiritual Companionship to individuals who desire to grow spiritually in their walk with Jesus Christ (see also Counseling & Coaching tab) as well as Formational Leadership Coaching for Christian leaders (see also Leadership Formation tab).

Counseling/ Spiritual Companionship/ Leadership Coaching Philosophy & Approaches: I provide a warm, non-judgmental, and safe therapeutic environment for my clients. It is important to help my clients in a holistic manner, meaning to address their thoughts, feelings, behaviors, family context, and their spirituality if so desired. I lived in and visited several countries, which has made me very culturally sensitive. My therapeutic approach is heavily informed by Christian spirituality and I often use and/ or suggest spiritual formation practices (e.g., Christian meditation, prayer, Bible reading, etc.).
